Why selfies distort your face.

The geometry: why distance changes your face

Perspective distortion is simple geometry. Features closer to the lens project larger than features farther away, and at selfie distance your nose is much closer to the camera — relative to your ears and jaw — than it is at portrait distance. In 2018, facial plastic surgery researchers built a mathematical model of this effect and published it in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery: a selfie taken about 12 inches from the face makes the nasal base appear roughly 30% wider, and the nose tip about 7% wider, than the same face photographed at 5 feet.

This has nothing to do with megapixels or lens quality. The same phone, held at portrait distance, renders your proportions accurately. The distortion lives entirely in how close the camera is.

Distortion changes how people judge you

The perceptual consequences were documented earlier, in a 2012 PLoS ONE study by Bryan, Perona, and Adolphs. Faces photographed from within personal space were rated lower on trustworthiness, competence, and attractiveness than the same faces photographed from farther away — and in an economic trust game, people literally invested less money with partners shown in close-range photos.

Crucially, the effect held when the researchers controlled for image size, expression, and lighting, and participants could not explicitly identify the camera distance. The distortion acts as an implicit cue: viewers don't know why the close-up face looks slightly off, but their social judgments move all the same.

Why you don't notice it in your own selfies

If selfie distortion is this measurable, why do selfies look normal to you? Habit. You see your own face at close range constantly — in mirrors, in your front camera — so the close-range version of your face is the version you know best. A stranger seeing your photo has no such calibration; they just see a face whose proportions read as slightly less trustworthy, without knowing why.

How to take a photo without the distortion

The fix costs nothing: put distance between the camera and your face. Have someone else take the photo from four to six feet away, or set the phone down, step back, and use a timer. If you must shoot alone at arm's length, extend fully and use the rear camera — front cameras tend to have wider lenses that get used even closer.

Zooming in slightly from farther away beats standing close, because zoom crops the image without changing the geometry. Portrait modes at a normal distance are fine; what matters is the physical distance from lens to nose, not the framing.

The limits of this research

The 30% figure is a modeled average — the actual distortion varies with your facial structure, the exact distance, and the lens. And distance is one variable among several: lighting, expression, and crop still matter, and a well-lit arm's-length photo can beat a badly lit distant one.

As always, perception research describes how photos are judged, not who you are. The practical takeaway is narrow and useful: if two of your candidate photos differ mainly in camera distance, the research says favor the one taken from farther away — or better, test both and compare.
