The claim, and where it came from
The 'cheerleader effect' — the idea that people look more attractive in a group than alone — jumped from sitcom joke to psychology when Drew Walker and Edward Vul published evidence for it in Psychological Science in 2014. Their explanation was elegant: the visual system automatically computes an average of the faces in a group, group averages tend to look attractive, and some of that average rubs off on each individual face.
The finding attracted attention precisely because it sounded like a free upgrade: post a group photo, borrow your friends' faces, look better. The replications that followed tell a more precise — and more modest — story.
What the replications actually find
In 2019, Daniel Carragher and colleagues ran a series of preregistered-scale experiments published open access in Scientific Reports. The effect replicated: target faces were consistently rated more attractive in a group than alone. But the size was around 1.5–2.0% — real, measurable, and small. Where you stand in the group made no difference, and the effect even appeared when the surrounding images were not faces at all.
That last detail matters, because it undermines the original 'averaging' explanation. If standing next to houses boosts a face about as much as standing next to people, the group average of faces cannot be doing the work.
Why it happens: evaluation, not pixels
A 2021 study in Frontiers in Psychology by Messner, Carnelli, and Höhener offered a cleaner mechanism: a change in evaluation mode. Judged alone, a face is compared against your internal standard of attractiveness; judged in a group, it is compared against the faces around it. That shift alone produced a cheerleader effect even when every face in the group was equally attractive.
The practical translation: the group photo is not making you look better — it is changing the question the viewer's brain answers. The boost is a quirk of comparison, and it is worth a percentage point or two.
The practical math for profile photos
Set the ~2% gain against the costs. In a group photo, a viewer must first work out which person you are — friction that dating-app data suggests you cannot afford in a seconds-long evaluation. The first photo's job is instant identification and a clear first impression; a group shot fails the first half outright.
The evidence-based lineup keeps both findings: lead with a clear solo portrait, and if group photos earn a slot, put them later — where they add social context and, at the margin, the cheerleader effect works quietly in your favor rather than against your findability.
The limits of this research
These are lab studies with controlled arrays of faces, not swipe interfaces — real profiles add motion, captions, and context the experiments strip away. Effect sizes this small are also easily swamped: a slightly better solo photo beats a slightly flattering group photo by far more than 2%.
